In Memoriam: Luis Jiménez (1940—2006)
June 15, 2006

Luis Jiménez, Vaquero, modeled 1980/cast 1990, acrylic urethane, fiberglass, steel armature, 199 x 114 x 67 in., Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift of Judith and Wilbur L. Ross, Jr., Anne and Ronald Abramson, Thelma and Melvin Lenkin, 1990.44

Luis was a close friend to many people here at SAAM and his Vaquero, long installed at our north entrance, is a symbol of the museum. It’s going to take us a few days to gather our thoughts and share a full account of this remarkable artist’s life.

Vaquero is being reinstalled outside the museum today in anticipation of the July 1 opening of the museum: we’ll post pictures and video.
