Picture This: Marilyn and Marilyn
July 1, 2006

Visitors to The National Portrait Gallery can see Andy Warhol's famous portrait of Marilyn Monroe. On opening day we had a wandering Monroe impersonator grace the portrait. Andy Warhol, Charlie Chaplin, George Washington and Uncle Sam could be seen walking through the halls all day long. Photo by Joanna Champagne.

We ran into Marilyn just outside the Upper West Side Cafe yesterday afternoon, and she asked blithely if we had seen her portrait yet. "Yes!" I eagerly answered, "And your calendar pinup was pretty good, too!"

The look Ms. Monroe gave me didn't exactly say "Seven Year Itch."

I wonder if people were taking pictures of themselves with the acting Marilyn Monroe. That would have been fun.

Consider this as life imitating art imitating life.
