Surf's Up at American Art!
August 5, 2014

Family Day

Thanks to Pinch from the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, Homer from Bethesda Big Train, and The Bird from the Baltimore Orioles for visiting the Baseball Family Festival at the American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery at last month's Family Festival!

The dog days of summer and the beach beckons but can't get out of town? Well, American Art can help with that. This Saturday, August 9, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., we are bringing some of the best parts of the beach in doors! Under the glass canopy of the Kogod Courtyard (and in the air conditioning) we'll be learning tropical dances, including the hula, with Kinikia from DC Hippodrome. Between dance performances enjoy the melodic sounds of our steel drum band Oasis Island Sounds while making beach themed crafts, playing in our Kinetic Sand sandbox, and tossing around one or several of our beach balls. We’ll be live-streaming beaches from coast-to-coast on our big screen, if you need an ocean fix, but feel free to leave your sunscreen at home.

Did you know we have Family Days every month? Check out American Art's Calendar for what's in store in the next few months.

Public programs coordinators Katie Crooks and Laurel Fehrenbach and public programs assistant Kaylin Lapan contributed to this post.
